The ancient tea culture of China had originated before Sanguo(三國). It prevailed in high society with dissemination of Confucianism, Buddhism as well as Thought of Pure Discourse during the Wei Jin(魏晉) period. The great canal from the Yangtze River to the Yellow River which has opened to traffic by Yangje(煬帝) of the Sui(隋) Dynasty resulted in the economical unification of north and south continent. Tea has been used for medicinal purposes till the Nanbei(南北) Dynasty. The economical unification of north and south continent played an important role in the spreading of tea over the folk community.

As the economics continued to prosperous in the Tang Dynasty(唐代), tea has been brought into fashion from the aristocracy to the folk community. It means that tea was turned the privileged class-dominated thing into the favorite of all classes. The literary men of the Tang Dynasty provided the literature evidence of the ancient tea culture in China as they have written literature and poetry for tea. The typical literature was Chajing(茶經) of Yuk-u(陸羽, 733-804) and many good poems for tea were handed down by the literary men associated with him. Tea was designated as a staple product according to the Gongcha zhidu(貢茶制度) and Quecha zhidu(榷茶制度) by the royal family of the Tang Dynasty at the outset. In consequence, the Dynasties of many generations observed and administered tea as the important product of nation. It might show that the Chinese tea culture was substantially established and improved in the Tang age. The ancient tea culture in Korea was initiated with the introduction of the Chinese tea culture by the students and the Buddhist monks who were dispatched to Tang at this conjuncture.

Chajing, the work which was written by Yuk-u might be a literature of a thesaurus. It must be an encyclopedia of tea which explained various aspects such as ecology, cultivation, harvest and drinking purpose of tea. He spent his childhood in a temple, studied Confucianism in adolescence, and lived in seclusion in mountainous districts after the middle years of his life. Hence, it was not a mere of accident that the Chajing combined the thoughts of Sanjiao(三敎). The literary men in the Tang Dynasty delighted in versifying with tea as a subject matter. They regarded tea as a tool of mental culture or they lived in seclusion with versifying various poems such as tea culture poem, lyric poem, changhe poem(唱和詩), poem against misery of a Gongcha zhidu, and chan-like poem. Because poets who perused and shared each other's feeling composed poetry for tea living, tea poetry was regarded as a genre. Hence, tea art thought of literary men including Yuk-u has affected writings and poems for tea over future generations. For instance, the discrimination of superior tea water out of Yuk-u' view was expressed in Jiancha Shuiji(煎茶水記) of Jang U-sin(張又新). That has stimulated various controversies in tea water over a period of future generations.

Sanfeifa(三沸法) of Jiancha(煮茶), the process which was advocated by Liuyu, has been quoted more frequently in writings and poems for tea since Song yuan, and has elaborated further upon expressions related to Sanfeifa.

Mingzhan(茗戰), the Jiancha contest which was popular in the literary man community since the Song Dynasty and spreaded far and wide in the gentry since the Korea age.

Dongchasong(東茶頌) of Cho-ui Ui-sun(草衣意恂, 1786-1866), the book which was written around the end of the Joseon Dynasty period, affected by the literature of Chajing and Chalu(茶錄) of Jang won(張源) an. According to this, it might guess that the tea art of Yuk-u has affected Korean since the Joseon Dynasty period. The tea art of literary men including Yuk-u in the Tang Dynasty gave an important turn to the establishment of the ancient tea culture in China and the tea theory in future generations has been based on it.
